Oral Roberts (1918 - 2009)
Often credited with inspiring the modern evangelical movement, Oral Roberts began as a tent revival pastor who, through the use of radio and television, built a worldwide ministry. His message blended a hellfire vision with material success and believed that people are saved not so much by grace but by how they use their money. His favorite blessing was "May God bless you in your bodies, in your spirits and in your finances."
At the age of 17, Roberts suffered from tuberculosis. On the way to a nearby tent revival, Roberts believed that God spoke to him saying, “Son, I am going to heal you and you are going to take My healing power to your generation.” Laying his hands on Roberts, the revival preacher “healed” him and the young man left certain he was cured of the disease. Soon after, he began his religious career.
