Faith Healing
Peter Popoff (1946 - )
It was discovered that Popoff’s wife, Elizabeth, was busily reading previously gathered data about the audience into a device that would transmit the signal into a wireless receiver (a then unheard of technology) that Popoff wore in his ear. During the show, Popoff would go on to “cure” the imposter and call out numerous fake names and diseases from other audience plants.
Randi’s investigation came to the attention of nighttime television icon Johnny Carson and he was invited on Carson’s “Tonight Show” to make the startling pronouncement that Popoff was indeed a fake. Popoff’s ministry experienced a sharp decline after the “Tonight Show” revelation and Popoff declared bankruptcy in 1987. In 2011, the disgraced televangelist reemerged in a series of informercials on airtime he purchased on the Black Entertainment Television.
