Faith Healing
Peter Popoff (1946 - )
Self-proclaimed prophet and healer, Peter Popoff gained fame for his early 1980s revival meetings and his ability to “randomly” pick people out of his audience, know what was wrong with them and “cure” them. With uncanny perfection, Popoff would amazingly call out explicit details of his audience members in a manner that would be attributed to a direct connection to God.
His practices were called into question by noted skeptic and magician, James Randi. Randi initiated an elaborate investigation conducted during an actual revival. He planted imposters with false names and fake diseases in the audience, including a man dressed as a woman and supposedly suffering from uterine cancer. Randi, with the help of a trained crime scene analyst and special electronic equipment detected radio signals emanating from a backstage source.
