By 1947, Roberts was fully engaged in a healing revival ministry that traveled throughout the country. Thousands of sick people would stand in line for hours just to have Roberts lay his hands on them in prayer. On separate occasions, he claimed to have revived the dead through prayer and cause the withered leg of a young boy to grow back to normal size overnight. Both claims were never proven.
The late 1960s and into the following decade, his hour-long primetime religious specials featured Hollywood stars and musical guests in a variety show format.
The millions of dollars he made from his broadcasts allowed him to open his own college. Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, The Oral Roberts University opened in 196.
While Roberts became a pillar of the Tulsa community, he remained acutely aware of the press criticizm of his wealth. He routinely instructed his aides to airbrush the diamond rings he wore, off of his fingers in publicity photographs.
