9. Previews
The show previews for about a month before it opens. During previews, the creative team uses the reaction of the audiences to tweak and change their work, to make it as successful as possible. The show is “frozen” a few days before opening. Once the show is frozen, critics are invited, so that they have a chance to write their reviews in time for the opening night.
10. The Reviews are in
The critics’ reviews are published the morning after opening night. These reviews are extremely important because the marketing team and publicity teams can quote the reviewers in subsequent advertising. In addition, the local demographic seriously considers the critics’ thoughts when making the decisions on which shows to attend..
11. And the nominations are. . .
The Antoinette Perry Award for excellence in the theatre is also called the TONY Award. The receipt of this award is not only the highest honor for theatre professionals, but also a key tool for the marketing of a show. Even a TONY Award nomination gives a producer bragging rights.
