The Director
A director is the artistic "captain of the ship." A director works with the playwright if further shaping of the play is required; meets with designers to develop the visual style of a show; casts the actors and stages the play; and guides the entire production from start to finish.
The director’s role is a fairly recent development. Earlier, theatrical troupes were run by “actor-managers," who produced, directed, starred and often wrote their own plays (in the way some filmmakers do today.)
