About Surface Deep and Dr. Alicia Zalka, M.D.

Dr. Alicia Zalka, M.D., launched Surface Deep in 2012 because she saw a rapidly growing need for a bias-free voice of experience in educating and guiding consumers about caring for their skin.

Since Dr. Zalka first entered the field, interest in the beauty aspects of dermatology soared. With the onslaught of products and procedures aimed at "maintaining youth" and designed to profit from consumer obsession about looking great, Dr. Zalka believes that the public is frequently left confused and misguided about the very basics of skin care and how to navigate the growing advances in skin technology. Surface Deep is the place for answers -- not hype or hidden sales pitches.

A native of Long Island, NY, Dr. Zalka is on staff at Danbury Hospital and New Milford Hospital, and is a Clinical Attending at the Yale University Department of Dermatology. In private practice since 1995, Dr. Zalka is President and Managing Partner of Dermatology Associates of Western Connecticut in Danbury, CT with offices also in Ridgefield, Southbury and New Milford, CT. She cares for patients of all ages, and she practices medical, surgical, and cosmetic dermatology.

Among her professional accomplishments, Dr. Zalka was instrumental in creating, lobbying and passing the Tanning Bill in Connecticut in 2005. Under this bill, children under the age of 16 cannot receive tanning treatments.

Dr. Zalka received her undergraduate degree with honors from Boston University, and graduated as a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honor society from the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. She served her medical internship at Yale University, where she remains an Associate Clinical Professor of Dermatology. She received her fellowship degree in the specialty of dermatology from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Department of Dermatology, where she served as chief resident.

"Having great skin doesn't require the purchase of a bottle promising a magical youth serum. It just requires a little knowledge. With Surface Deep, I will give you the information you need to improve the health, fitness, and beauty of your skin. The foundation of skincare is prevention, not re-invention."

She is an active member of the American Academy of Dermatology, the American Medical Association, and the Connecticut State Medical Society. She was the president of the Connecticut State Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery Society from 2003 to 2006.

Dr. Zalka conducts lectures on various dermatology and skin health issues, and is a go to expert for the media. She has been interviewed by dozens of news outlets including ABC News, Fitness, Glamour, Redbook, Self, and Woman's Day, to name just a few.

Dr. Zalka considers herself a champion of the environment and has practiced "being green" long before it was fashionable to do so (dating back to the seventies when her older brother taught her about "pollution"). To that end, she urges manufacturers of skin care products to minimize packaging waste and use recycled materials and would like to see all consumers cut back on waste by purchasing products from companies that do not do animal testing and who supplement recycling.

Dr. Zalka is also very active in her community of Bridgewater, CT where she spearheads campaigns for The Bridgewater Land Trust and chaired three major fundraising events for land preservation. She also supports numerous animal rights groups, conservancy groups and farm initiatives.

Now… Let’s get Deep.
