One of the first female evangelists, Aimee Semple McPherson used "modern" inventions such as the radio and the automobile to spread her religious message and become a religious superstar.
After serving as a missionary in China and surviving the loss of her husband, evangelist Robert Semple, McPherson would return to the United States with a one-month old baby and become a traveling evangelist. Touring the East Coast in a 1912 Packard nicknamed, “Gospel Car,” one side featured the slogan “Jesus is Coming Soon-Get Ready” while the other asked, “Where Will You Spend Eternity?”
By 1921, McPherson’s fame spread across the country and thousands would travel miles to hear her message. True notoriety came when she helped a crippled woman rise from her wheelchair. As the audience proclaimed her a “faith healer” she rejected the title saying, “I am not a healer. Jesus is the healer. I am only the little office girl who opens the door and says, ‘Come in.’”
