William M. Branham claimed to first hear the voice a higher power at the age of 7. While playing outside, he noticed a whirlwind in a tree. As he watched, he heard a voice exclaim, “Do not drink or smoke or defile your body in any way, for when you get older I’ll have a work for you to do.” Branham became hysterical necessitating his parents to call the town’s doctor. While young William would eventually calm down, he would never forget the incident and would never go near the tree again.
Branham would continue to feel a heavenly presence and see visions throughout his early life but never acknowledged the events as a religious calling. It wasn’t until the age of 14 when he nearly lost both of his legs in a shotgun accident that his attitude towards religion changed. Laying in a pool of blood, he saw a horrifying vision of hell. Crying out to God for salvation, he promised to live a good life, honoring the words of the Lord. Branham survived and stayed true to his vow.
