A casting director is the person responsible for selecting the cast of a theatrical production, television show, or motion picture. A casting director’s key role is to find the best talent; the right fit for the directors and producers of a project.
Casting directors will send out the “breakdowns” to the agents for specific roles they are looking for. The breakdown will list the details of the age, ethnicity, physical, and personality traits associated with a particular part. If a casting director sees someone with a ‘look’ and background experience that matches a specific role, he/she will request an audition to the agent for that particular actor.
The Audition
If the first audition with the casting director goes well, the actor will most likely audition again but this time in front of the director and producers of the project. This audition process may vary at times and sometimes the actor may even have to audition a third time (or more) until a final selection is made. If an actor lands the part, the casting director will contact the actor’s agent to let him/her know and then the agent will inform the actor of the offer.
