Jo Mielziner
(1901 - 1976)
Jo Mielziner designed the sets, lighting (and occasionally costumes) for over 300 plays, spanning every genre. His greatest contribution to the art of theater design was his belief that the designer must discover the visual metaphor of the play, making the design element as important as the acting or direction. He created stage settings for plays ranging from Death of a Salesman and A Streetcar Named Desire, to the musicals Guys and Dolls and The King and I. In every case, he created a visual world that was unique
Mielziner also believed that the architecture of the theater was as important as the scenery on stage. He was one of the designers of Lincoln Center in New York, as well as many other theaters throughout the country.
