Ahrens & Flaherty

Ahrens & Flaherty became a powerful musical theater writing team in the 1980s. Stephen Flaherty (born in 1960) is an American composer who works most often in collaboration with Lynn Ahrens (born 1948), the American writer and lyricist for musical theater, television, and film.

Ahrens met Stephen Flaherty at the BMI Workshop in 1982 and they started working together the following year. They are responsible for writing the popular Broadway shows Once on This Island, which was nominated for 8 Tony Awards, Seussical the Musical, (which is one of the most performed musicals in the US and was nominated for the Grammy Award), and Ragtime, which ran for 834 performances and was nominated for 12 Tony Awards and won Best Original Score, a Drama Desk Award, and Outer Critics Circle Award.

Flaherty and Ahrens were also nominated for two Academy Awards and two Golden Globe Awards for their work on the animated film musical Anastasia. Flaherty and Ahrens also wrote original songs for the Chita Rivera autobiographcal show, Chita Rivera: The Dancer's Life, in 2005.
