In the sports world, Michael Vick became one of its most reviled figures. NFL fans and the country at large were revolted by his participation in the inhumane world of dog fighting. Vick would plead guilty to felony charges, served 21 months in prison and miss two seasons. Once one of the league's most promising quarterbacks, his career appeared to be nearly, if not completely, over. In 2009, Vick joined the Philadelphia Eagles, becoming one of the elite quarterbacks in the league. He won the "Offensive Player of the Month" award in September and the NFL player of the week for the first two weeks in November. Cynics would suggest that Michael Vick's story was being whitewashed due to his athletic ability. Many who have followed Vick closely through the years say that his professionalism, work ethic and approach to the game have all dramatically improved after being released from prison. Many will never forgive or root for Michael Vick because of his horrific dog fighting history but even his biggest critics must acknowledge that he has paid his debt to society and is entitled to earn a living again.
