While riding a train in 1990, J.K. Rowling daydreamed about a boy named Harry Potter who was a wizard. For the next 6 years she wrote the book much of which was written on pieces of scrap paper. She typed up a few copies, and sent it to two agents and one publishing company. One of the agents that she picked at random, loved the book and signed her on within three days. Several publishing companies turned her book down, before it was finally published in 1996. The first book made her enough money to get by on and she worked very hard writing the rest of the Harry Potter series, which totals 7 books in all.
