Tent Revivals

Moments before the revival was to begin, one of the preacher’s assistants would rise up in front of the crowd, often numbering over 5000 individuals, strutting back and forth on stage, yelling out holy words and praising God. Once the crowd was significantly fired up, the preacher would enter to begin a sermon full of God, fire and brimstone. In the midst of the religious frenzy, it wasn’t uncommon for worshipers to begin speaking in tongues while others would collapse to the floor. The preacher would call for the sick to come forward as well as any souls who wanted to be saved.  The line to reach the preacher for just a moment of his touch would sometimes last for hours.

As the exhausted revelers exited the tent, the preacher’s helpers would pass around a bucket or trashcan to collect donations for the Lord. These donations, while intended for religious use, often stayed with the preacher and his staff.
